Billy Cottrell, a former Ph.D. candidate known for his anarchist ideas, was convicted in 2005 for the torching of more than 125 SUV in Southern California.
Although supported by the Earth Liberation Front, a group that promotes sabotage to stop the destruction of the natural environment, Cottrell was no environmental activist himself, but saw SUVs as "smog-spewing symbols of a wasteful American culture that is hurting the planet".
